Paruppu podi | kandi podi is a spice mix made using toor dal and balck pepper as main ingredients. Usually, it is mixed with hot rice, and smeared with ghee or sesame oil, it is a staple in South Indian cuisine. In Andhra cuisine they make spicier version of Paruppu podi | dal powder | kandi podi.

South Indian podi recipe using toor dal – no onion no garlic recipe
Servings 1 box
Ingredients
- ½ cup Toor dal
- 1 tsp whole black pepper
- 2 red chili
- ¼ tsp asafoetida
- Salt as needed
Instructions
- Dry roast the ingredients till the toor dal turns a golden brown color.
- When it is cool, grind it into fine powder.
- Store this in an airtight container.
- Enjoy with hot rice.

Paruppu podi is my all time favourite. I make it with chutney daal instead of toor daal. Lovely presentation as always.
Adding crushed garlic makes it more flavorful. As Raji says I make this with pottu kadalai also. Nice pics
