Kothavarangai | cluster beans | Gawar in Hindi, we usually make Paruppu usili with this. This is the classic way of Kothavarangai in a South Indian home. We also make Kothavarangai kootu in our house. During my childhood days, I have never tasted this vegetable as my dad doesn’t prefer this as it has a sweetish taste. After marriage, my father-in-law doesn’t prefer this he says it causes gas. So I have not included this in my cooking much. Though I have seen my friends buying these cluster beans very often in the Indian stores, I have never bought them
Usually, they make usili or thengai potta poriyal with cluster beans. Recently while talking with a friend, she shared her method of making cluster beans. That sounded very interesting and easy too. So I ordered a pack of Kothavarangai from the Indian shop and made the recipe following her instructions. We all loved it and enjoyed it with sambar rice. From that day onwards, cluster beans are a regular one on my menu.

Looks very yummy. am sure will taste good with south indian sambhar, rasam or other gravies. In my dad’s house it was prohibited as a vegetable that was renounced in kashi. My husband’s house no one likes its taste and they rarely use it as paruppu usili. I used to add it in aviyal or vatha kuzhambu..This way looks tempting, I will try this. It is good to include due to its fibrous nature.
Yes, many people leave this in Kashi. Never tried adding this in Vatha kuzhambu or aviyal. Will give this a try soon. Yes, it is very good for health too. Thanks for sharing.
