Kosumalli | Kosambari recipe

Kosumalli | kosambari recipe | Vada paruppu is a traditional South Indian salad recipe with moong dal, carrot, and cucumber. Kosumalli recipe with full video and step-by-step instructions.

We make kosumalli | kosambari for Rama navami as a one of the neivedyam. We also make Neer mor, panagam for Sri Rama Navami neivedyam. It is an easy recipe, a very popular one served in Tamil brahmin weddings and feasts.

Kosumalli is a protein-rich South Indian salad. We add yellow moong dal, grated carrots, and cucumber to this salad. We are not cooking the moong dal in this recipe. It is soaked in hot water for 15 minutes and then mixed with cucumber and carrots.

Sweet kosumalli and this savory kosumalli is served in Tamil brahmin weddings. Sweet kosumalli is made using chana dal and kalkandu | sugar candy. In our family, we make kosumalli for most of the festivals like Deepavali, Varalakshmi nombu.

You can add grated coconuts to this kosumalli. Also during the summer season, you can add finely chopped raw mangoes to this. If adding mangoes, skip the lemon juice in this recipe.

Ingredients

  • ¼ cup yellow moong dal
  • ½ cup grated carrot
  • ½ cup grated cucumber
  • 1 tsp oil
  • ½ tsp mustard seeds
  • 2 pinches asafoetida
  • 2 green chilies
  • 1 tbsp chopped coriander leaves
  • Salt as needed
  • 1 tsp lemon juice

Instructions

  • In a pan add ½ cup of water and bring this to a rolling boil.
  • Add the yellow moong dal to this and switch off the flame.
  • Let this sit in hot water for 15 minutes.
  • In a pan add oil and add the mustard seeds, chopped green chilis and asafoetida .
  • Once the mustard seeds splutter, add the chopped coriander leaves.
  • Switch off the flame.
  • Once done, drain the water and add this dal to a bowl.
  • Add the grated carrot, cucumber, salt and the tempering mix to this.
  • Add the lemon juice.
  • Combine everything well.
  • Kosumalli | vada paruppu is ready.

Notes

1. You can add 1 tbsp of grated coconut to this kosumalli.
2. Finely chopped raw mango can also be added to the kosumalli | kosambari
